Bring awareness

Your mental health affects every area of your life. Once stigmatized, people are now starting to prioritize mental health more than ever before. Americans bring awareness and connect people to resources in support of better mental health each May. Mental Health Awareness Month was first celebrated in 1949 and has been creating awareness on the importance of mental wellbeing since. Take this month to make your mental health a priority.

Break the stigma

If you suffer from mental illness, you are not alone. 1 in 5 U.S. adults experience mental illness each year. The status of our mental wellbeing also creates a ripple effect on more negative outcomes. People with depression have a 40% higher risk of developing cardiovascular and metabolic diseases than the general population. Luckily there are simple steps that you can do today to build a foundation of better mental health.

Check in with yourself

Adding mediation, mindfulness and daily self-care rituals into your routine can make a significant impact on your wellbeing. Just a few minutes a day reflecting on yourself can bring about meaningful change. So practice mindfulness by simply being aware of the present moment. Checking in with yourself in a quick meditation has been found to improve stress reactivity, increase overall happiness, lower blood pressure, improve depression and reduce negative thoughts. Practicing mindfulness can improve sleep and reduce chronic pain, both of which are connected to overall mental health. Even just a few minutes a day can help you restore your inner peace and find calmness in your otherwise busy schedule.

Research reveals that mindfulness is significantly connected with more positive thinking, overall wellbeing and life satisfaction. Mindfulness gives us a chance to become more aware of ourselves and find more gratitude. Making time in your day to practice a self-care activity that makes you feel relaxed and centered can have major impacts on your overall health.
